How much does a financial coach cost?
There’s no standard price for financial coaching. Here’s how coaches typically charge, what drives the price, what you should get for your money, and how to decide whether it’s worth it for you.
The short answer: Financial coaches usually charge in one of three ways: per session, a one-time package, or a monthly fee for ongoing support. Because “financial coach” isn’t a regulated title, prices and what’s included vary widely, so compare what you’ll actually receive, not just the price. Look for clear, upfront pricing and a coach who doesn’t earn commissions on products.
How financial coaches typically charge
- Per session or hourly. You pay as you go for individual calls. It’s flexible, but the total cost can be hard to predict, and there may be little structure between sessions.
- A one-time package. A set price for a defined result, such as a spending review, a planning call, and a written plan. You know the full cost up front.
- Monthly coaching. A recurring fee for regular check-ins and adjustments. It’s useful for accountability once you have a plan; check how cancellation works before you sign up.
- A free consultation. Many coaches offer a short free call to see whether you’re a good fit. Use it to ask questions, not to sit through a sales pitch.
What affects the price
- How deeply your finances are reviewed, for example whether the coach works through your actual statements
- Whether you receive a written plan or only conversation
- The number and length of sessions
- Support between sessions
- The coach’s background, credentials, and experience
- Whether you’re working on your own or as a couple
What you should get for your money
Whatever the format, good coaching should leave you with:
- A clear picture of where your money currently goes
- A realistic monthly spending plan you can actually follow
- A prioritized plan for paying down debt
- Specific savings goals, including for irregular yearly bills
- Next steps you understand and can act on without your coach
Coaching usually doesn’t include investment management, tax preparation, or product recommendations. If a “coach” is mainly selling insurance, investments, or loans, you’re talking to a salesperson.
Is a financial coach worth it?
It depends on what the plan changes for you. For many people, the biggest payoff comes from interest they stop paying on debt and from savings that finally become consistent.
Here’s an illustration using our Debt Payoff Calculator, assuming a fixed APR and no new charges. A $10,000 credit card balance at 19% APR, paid at $350 a month, takes 39 months to pay off and costs about $3,417 in interest. If a spending plan frees up another $150 a month, paying $500 a month clears it in 25 months with about $2,120 in interest: 14 months sooner and about $1,297 less interest.
Those numbers are an example, not a promise; your results depend on your situation and follow-through. But they show why a clear plan can be worth more than it costs. Try your own numbers.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What exactly is included, and what will I have at the end?
- How many sessions are there, and how long is each one?
- Is the price all-inclusive, or are there extra fees?
- How do payment, rescheduling, refunds, and cancellation work?
- Do you earn commissions or referral fees on any products?
- What is your background, and what credentials do you hold?
